What Are Reverse Osmosis Filters/How Do They Work?
Reverse osmosis is a method of purifying water by pushing it through a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane allows pure water molecules through it, whilst impurities are flushed away. By using Reverse Osmosis filters, it is possible to remove all suspended solids, up to 98% of dissolved solids and virtually all bacteria, pesticides and viruses.
At the heart of any reverse osmosis system is the membrane; water is forced under pressure through the membrane to a storage tank and the waste by-product goes to drain. In addition to the membrane reverse osmosis unit also incorporates pre-filters and post-filters. Reverse osmosis systems are compact enough to be installed under most kitchen sinks.
However, the units do require a minimum water pressure of 2.7 bar/40psi - so you must have your home's water pressure assessed before purchasing the unit. Small pumps, specially designed with reverse osmosis systems in mind, are available if your water pressure requires boosting.
Why Choose A Reverse Osmosis System?
Better-tasting water.
Without chemicals in your drinking water, it will naturally taste better – Reverse Osmosis water is usually found to be far purer than water that has come directly from the tap. Fresh water is far more refreshing and satisfying.
No Contaminants.
As Reverse Osmosis filters are primarily used to remove particles and other impurities from water, no contaminants will emanate your water supply. A number of parasites will also be filtered from the water, providing protection against illness – if your water suffers from any type of harmful contaminants, a Reverse Osmosis system will be ideal to purify the water.
Low-Energy Usage.
The amount of energy used by Reverse Osmosis will be relatively low when compared to other water filtration systems. This ensures a productive, economic system that is ideal if you need to use as little energy as possible.
Saves Space and Is Expandable.
Depending on where you’d like to place it, procuring a Reverse Osmosis system can help to save space (when compared to other filters) and can easily to be expanded to cater for a larger volume of water.
Easy-to-Maintain.
Requiring maintenance twice-a-year, Reverse Osmosis water filters are easy to take care of – the filter is straightforward to remove and replace, making the job less complex and time-consuming.
Different Purification Levels.
There are 7 different stages of Reverse Osmosis, with each one getting increasingly more intensive. You can select how many stages you want and customise your choice to suit your needs. As an example of how they work – the first stage will remove particles like dust and silt. The next stage will be a carbon filter that removes bad tastes, caused by chlorine and other chemicals. The water will continue to be pushed through the filter to remove the remaining impurities – water freshness, alkalisation and UV filters (that kill bacteria and viruses) being key contributors.
Money-Saving.
Aside from contributing to lower-energy usage, Reverse Osmosis filters can help you to save money simply by cutting out the need to purchase bottled water in your quest for a healthier drink. All you’ll need is a reusable bottle and fill it up as and when – helping to cut down on the number of plastics you use/have to recycle too.
