Why Should You Filter Your Water?
Did you know that a vast selection of different chemicals is added to tap water? Chemicals such as liquefied chlorine, fluorosilicic acid, aluminium sulphate, calcium hydroxide, and sodium silicofluoride are routinely added to our water supply. Whilst it is important to treat tap water to ensure its drinkability, key scientists are now providing evidence that long-term ingestion of chemicals used to treat tap water could be causing some major health concerns.
However, for some the most concerning chemical added to our tap water is fluoride. This chemical is very useful with regards to oral hygiene; it’s often used in toothpaste and mouthwash. Although, it is extremely important that you pay attention to the warnings not to swallow toothpaste or mouthwash as fluoride is actually more toxic than lead.
Fluoride is used in a variety of different products, including pesticides to kill insects and rats, but it is also sometimes added to tap water. Approximately 10% of the UK’s water supply is fluoridated, despite the fact that fluoridation of water is banned in all other European countries. This is because it when water has high levels of fluoride, it can cause significant health issues, for example “tens of millions of people throughout China and India suffer from serious crippling bone diseases from drinking water with elevated levels of fluoride” [source fluoridealert.org]
Additionally, there are more things to be concerned about with regards to your tap water. It isn’t just about chemicals being added to the water. You also need to consider how the water actually gets to your house. After all, it’s easy to forget that tap water doesn’t ‘come from the tap’; it travels to your home from somewhere else, often using underground piping. Many of these underground pipes have been underground since the Victorian times; just think of all the undesirable things that could have contaminated those pipes over the decades.
Is UV Filtered Water Safe To Drink?
Ultraviolet light can be dangerous to humans, so it’s understandable if you’re sceptical about the safety of drinking water from a UV system. However, it’s actually one of the safest, cleanest, and most easy-to-maintain methods of assuring that your water is bacteria free.
This is because the ultraviolet light destroys 99.99% of harmful organisms without adding chemicals or changing your water’s taste or odour; resulting in a highly efficient filtration system to kill micro-organisms in your water supply. With regards to UV systems from Liff, these filtration systems are suitable for flow rates starting at 8 litres per minute, but scaling up to 19 litres per minute with the P30N and 54 litres per minute with the P55N.
Common Signs You Need A Water Filter
In many cases tap water is adequate to drink, however there are some clear signs that you need a water treatment system at home. These include but are not limited to:-
Simply put, your tap water should be clear. If the water is cloudy, yellow, orange, or red; this is a clear sign that there are contaminants in your water supply that need to be filtered out. Additionally, with regards to colour, if your clothes are getting stains after being washed in the washing machine, or if dishes in a dishwasher are suffering from stains; you might have iron, manganese, or sulphur in your water.
Water shouldn’t taste bad; it should be very easy to drink due to its lack of strong tastes. So if you find that your tap water doesn’t taste nice, you should consider installing some form of water treatment, as this could be a sign there are contaminants in your water.
Similar to colour, clean water should be that; clean. So if your tap water smells like chlorine, metal, rotten eggs, or anything else ‘strange’; you need to remove the contaminants causing that smell.
If your skin and hair feel dry after washing your hands or showering; your water supply might be to blame. This is because some minerals which cause water hardness and chlorine can cause your skin and hair to dry out.
